The Grandmasters Trailer
So, I don't speak Chinese, so I have no idea what's going on in Wong Kar Wai's latest, but Ziyi Zhang is doing kung fu in epic '40s furs so you KNOW I am there. I mean, I would be anyway, because his films are always amazing, but I'm extra excited, you know?

bloom by gain
(Skip ahead to the 2 minute mark to get to the actual music video part)
Um, so if I get a hot pink sweater do you think it will bring all the boys to the yard?
Also that explicit sex scene in this video is kind of a big deal, because censorship, especially of sex, is still done all the time on South Korean television.

I don't know why Harper's Bazaar is peeping Elmo's wardrobe, but it is surprisingly big, and I am pretty jelz of his hat collection.

stoker trailer
I had no idea that Oldboy's director Park Chan-wook was making English-language films. This one looks a bit like an extra creepy, gender swapped Hamlet, where instead of whining about it Hamlet possibly actually does something about Uncle Murder. I am totally there for this one!

game of thrones ladies at the 2012 emmy awards
Several of the ladies of Game of Thrones made an appearance on the Emmy red carpet (The show was nominated for Best Drama). Lena rocked her usual gothic queen look that suits her so well, and Emilia wore white (Again. Seriously, I don't think I've ever seen her in not a white dress). Peter Dinklage (who was nominated for Best Supporting again, even though he was lead actor this season) and Richard Madden were also there, but they were just wearing basic black tuxes. There were no wins for the show at the awards last night, but the show did pick up 6 Creative Arts Emmys last week. I think it won the most overall with those six, but it's still disappointing that a genre show can't win at the regular awards.

so this might be my favourite thing i've internetted today
This is most definitely Kyary's LEAST crazy video to date, too. I like the drummer. He looks like he is having fun.

an actual downtown abbey trailer is here!
And it is chock full of makeouts and semi-nudity, just the way God intended. Ugh that annoying maid is still around though.
G DRAGON has a new music video!
It is of course crazy, and fabulous, and he has a baby tiger for NO REASON.

fan bing bing is still the fiercest bitch out there
Oh, and the dress is by Chris Bu Kewen, who is a relatively new Chinese designer/stylist.He bases a lot of his work on traditional Chrinese fabrics and techniques. I don't think he even has shops yet! She also wore one of his creations to Cannes last year, and I might like it even better than this one! To learn more about Bu Kewen, read this article at China Daily.

I have no idea what it has to do with Sherlock, but it's hilarious. And their little detective outfits are cute.

mad men season 5
Wednesday, March 21, 2012
april is an embarassment of TV riches
For some strange reason, almost no new shows premiered this winter season (at least, nothing that I was really interested). But after 3 months of TV boredom, all my favourites (and new shows that I have been interested since their announcement) are coming! I like to think it's all for my birthday, because I'm self centred like that, so thank you cable!
First of all, Game of Thrones! April 1st!! Yaaaaaay! HBO has released like, a trailer a week for the past two months, building the hype, but here's the latest one. Also: I saw Melisandre's costume guys! It was AWESOME!
Next up, premiering on April 6th, is Starz's Magic City. It's their take on a midcentury period piece, a la Mad Men. But it's starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan (who is amazing), is more of a crime drama, and takes place in 1950s Miami, so I think it's going to be a very different show. If it can stand up to Mad Men, which is back this Sunday (!!!) though, remains to be seen.
The Borgias also comes back on April 6th! I love The Borgias, second hottest cast on TV after GoT! And this season looks to be even more action packed than the last!
From Tiny Furniture Writer and Director Lena Dunham, and producer Judd Apatow, this is cable's answer to the trend of 20-something young women sitcoms. And as a twenty something young women, I appreciate being represented. I don't know if anyone else noticed this, but for a really long time most shows starring women were either about teenage girls or women who are 35+! I think the only show with a twenty something was Ugly Betty (remember Ugly Betty?).
Veep is another HBO show, from Thick of It creator Armando Iannucci. It also stars Julia Louis-Dreyfus AND Tony Hale (ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT REUNION!!!) so I am THERE with bells on. It premieres April 22.

paris fashion week: exuberant pattern capes and spaceship coasts at comme des garcons
One thing's for sure, Rei Kawakubo is never boring. In the sea of Paris fashion week photos that I am belatedly catching up on, her exuberants patterns, colours and crazy cuts stand out in a sea of dark colours and furs. I love the spaceship coats, they are HILARIOUS. It's everything fashion should be -- FUN!!

i'll be watching: the deep blue sea
Rachel Weisz, '50s fashion, Tom Hiddleston partially nude? Yes please!
emma stone at the vanity fair oscar party
I'm a bit behind on my red carpet voyeurism this year because they have been so dreadfully dull that I can't bring myself to do it, but what happened!? The giant red bow dress wasn't her greatest pick, but this is just...completely cracky in so many ways. Also, this is apparently Chanel??
Emma is not even the only one who wore a dress like this, as Ginnifer Goodwin wore a similar cocktail length design by Peter Som to the same party. So, dear designers: NO.

new mad men season 5 ad hints at things to come
The newest ad for the upcoming and long-awaited new season of Mad Men (MARCH 25TH!!!!!) features Don Draper looking wistfully at a store window and the mannequins therein. One of them is male, sitting in a chair and wearing a robe and pajamas, with a naked female mannequin dropping her dress. According to creator Matthew Weiner, all of this will make sense by the end of season 5. My theory? Seemingly perfect wife and mother-figure Megan turns out to be frigid once she's got what she wanted.
What is your theory as to what this mysterious ad will mean?
see banana republic's mad men spring collection
The collection is coming out in three days in select stores and online, and Flare has a slideshow of the full collection, including prices. Of course I'm loving it, especially this hot pink number. Too bad I don't have anywhere to where it. Also $185.

milan fashion week: goodbye raf simons
This was Raf Simon's last collection for Jil Sander (Jil is coming back! OMG!), and he really outdid himself. The colour story runs the gamut from pastels (a unique choice for a fall collection) to more traditional navy, black and red, all with Jil Sander's signature basic cuts and exquisite fit. It's being rumoured that Mr. Simons will be taking over at either Dior or YSL. Personally I think YSL would be a better fit for him, since it's more minimalist than Dior, although it would also be nice to see what he would bring to Dior as well, and if he would maybe go outside his comfort zone more there. Time will tell who has snapped him up though, and I am looking forward to seeing what Jil Sander has to offer now that she is coming back to helm her own label again.

milan fashion week: prada love
Love the prints, of course. I think Miuccia really outdid herself this year though, and I think there's a lot more pants in this collection than in the last few I can recall. I especially covet that bad though. I'm not sure how I feel about the shoes though. I've been hearing that flat, menswear-inspired shoes have been all over the Milan runways this season. Of course, as someone who can't really wear crazy heels anymore, of course I don't lament this trend. The longer I look at them, the more I like them, I can say that. And they do look super comfortable. And they are definitely more attractive than those dang Creepers.

new york fashion week: ohne titel gives it to me graphic
It's like they know how much I love me some black and white graphic realness. There are also some really great navy pieces, and like these really comfy looking snood-type things? I was super into it.

50 best harajuku hats
This compilation of hats from Tokyo street style site Japanese Streets is kind of making my life right now. I want them all! And it's totally true that they love them some hats over there. There were so many hat shops in Tokyo when I went, and I'm pretty sure I at least peeped in every one.

obi belts at zac posen
New York Fashion Week is just starting to wind down, and I'm afraid I haven't been keeping up with it as well as I have in the past. But the flared obi belts at Zac Posen on Sunday definitely caught my eye, because you know I love a good kimono. The press seemed to like them too, though the way they talked about them, I was surprised to find they only graced two looks from the collection. Asian influences seem to be everywhere in New York for fall though, with Jason Wu also being inspired by a '30s style chinoiserie.

the banana launching another mad men collection
After the massive success of last fall's Mad Men/Banana Republic collection, they're releasing another one for spring. It's due online and in North American stores on March 1st, giving you plenty of time to shop for your March 25th premiere party (I plan on having lots of vodka gimlets, because they are easy and delicious-sounding!). The picture above is so far all that has been shown from the collection, but if you keep an eye on the Banana Republic facebook page and the official AMC Mad Men website, they should be releasing more images at some point over the next few weeks.
tilda swinton at the BAFTAs
Tilda! What? Why? WHY DO YOU LOOK SO NORMAL AND BORING!? This is not what I want for you! The red carpet has been such a snooze with you on this normalcy kick. Where is the old Tilda!?
I do love your David Bowie hair, but it is just not enough to save this look. Not that it's bad, it's just not YOU baby.
Love,
Me
P.S. Christina Hendricks, we need to have a talk.

helmut lang f/w rtw based on game of thrones?
Supposedly this collection was based on the show, but I really don't see it? Just in this one outfit whose collar reminds me of Varys' robes, and the blood spattered effects that remind me of Dany eating that horse's heart. I guess the knits could be seen as kind of chainmail-inspired. But otherwise, what?

kit harrington in men's journal
Since Game of Thrones' second season is about to start in 50 DAYS (yes I'm counting, Mad Men is in 44!) , the gang of course have been hitting the magazine circuit. Here's a fashion spread featuring Kit Harrington in Men's Journal! Also Vogue or Elle totally needs to do something with all of the ladies from GoT, don't you think? I would buy so many copies.

i'm watching...bomb girls
I was immediately drawn to this little Canadian drama because of the period and the costumes (of course), and the fact that it has Being Erica's Kai in it (although I'm not sure he was the best choice, as his looks don't really suit the period, but that is neither here nor there). I only chanced upon an ad at the movie theatre of all places, otherwise I might not have known about it. So, smart move, Global.
But anyway, it's actually a decent show, with interesting likeable characters, great costumes, and with an incredibly different take on the period (being about the women who worked at munitions factories during the Second World War in Canada). It's not a story that I think has been told in a network drama before. Plus it has the incredible Peter Outerbridge in it, so if there's no other reason to watch it, do it for that! Also, if you're into Murdoch Mysterties (the book or show), you will probably like it, because the concept comes from Maureen Jennings.
